'Viagra' for women to hit the shelves soon

Posted by: admin

Washington, May 24 (ANI): Good news for women who want to perk up the action in their bedroom-the Food and Drug Administration committee is thinking of endorsing the first pill designed to do for women what Viagra does for men-boost their sex lives.

A German pharmaceutical giant wants to sell a drug with the decidedly unsexy name "flibanserin," which has shown prowess for sparking a woman's sexual desire by fiddling with her brain chemicals.

The FDA's Reproductive Health Drugs Advisory Committee will meet on June 18 to consider the request.

But the prospect of the drug's approval has already triggered debate over whether the medication, like others in the pipeline, represents a long-sought step toward equity for women's health or the latest example of the pharmaceutical industry fabricating a questionable disorder to sell unnecessary and potentially dangerous drugs.

"Achieving a happy and healthy sex life can be a real and important problem for some women. But we have lots of questions about the 'pink Viagra,'" the Washington Post quoted Amy Allina of the National Women's Health Network, a Washington-based advocacy group, as saying.

Viagra's catapult to blockbuster status after its 1998 approval set off a flurry of interest in me-too medications for women.

However, drugmaker Pfizer's hopes that its "little blue pill" would also ignite female libido fizzled, making it clear that a woman's sexuality is more complicated than a man's.

But, Germany's Boehringer Ingelheim is optimistic that flibanserin is on the verge of becoming the first prescription medication to tap what some have estimated could be a 2 billion dollar market in the United States alone.

"We believe women deserve options and we're hoping flibanserin may represent a safe and effective option for many women," said Michael Sand, who heads the company's clinical research on flibanserin.

Scientists found that flibanserin, developed as an antidepressant, was ineffective for treatment of depression.

But the drug appeared to produce an unexpected side effect: boosting women's libido.

This prompted the company to study it for hypoactive sexual desire disorder, or HSDD, an otherwise unexplained loss of sexual thoughts, fantasies and desire that can cause significant emotional distress.

Some research suggests 10 percent of women may suffer from HSDD.

"It's not that they are averse to sex. It's just that they don't care about it. They just stop thinking about it. It's like a switch has been flipped. It's a loss for them. They miss it. And they want it back," said Anita H. Clayton, a professor of psychiatry and neurobehavioral sciences at the University of Virginia who has studied the drug for the company. (ANI)

H1-B visas lose charm as recession stalks US

New York, April 30 -- The once prized H1-B visa, which permits foreign professionals to work in the United States for a limited period, appears to be losing its appeal in India. The US sets limits for the number of H1-B visas each country is annually entitled to.

For India, the cap was lowered in 2004 from nearly 2 lakh to 65,000 in the 'regular' category and 20,000 more for those with postgraduate degrees from US universities. Usually applications for H1-B visas exceed the number that will be issued, within the first few days of a new financial year.

But in 2009-10, the number exceeded the cap only in the third week of December. In this financial year, until the third week of April, there have only been around 16,000 applications in the first category and 6,700 in the second, according to US Citizenship and Immigration Services figures.

With the US economy yet to recover from financial meltdown and unemployment remaining high, it is no longer the El Dorado for professionals it once used to be.

Underwater asphalt volcanoes discovered in the Pacific Ocean

London, April 27 (ANI): An international team of scientists has discovered underwater asphalt volcanoes that were hidden in the depths of the Pacific Ocean for 40,000 years.

The research, funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), was a collaboration between scientists from the University of California at Santa Barbara (UCSB), the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), University of California at Davis, University of Sydney and University of Rhode Island.

The largest of these undersea Ice Age volcanoes lies at a depth of 700 feet (220 meters), too deep for scuba diving, which explains why the volcanoes have never before been spotted by humans, pointed out Don Rice, director of NSF's Chemical Oceanography Program, which funded the research.

Lead author David Valentine, a geoscientist at UCSB, said: "They're larger than a football-field-long and as tall as a six-story building."They're massive features, and are made completely out of asphalt."

Valentine and colleagues first viewed the volcanoes during a 2007 dive on the research submersible Alvin.

Valentine credits Ed Keller, an earth scientist at UCSB, with guiding him and colleagues to the site.

He said: "Ed had looked at some bathymetry [sea floor topography] studies conducted in the 1990s and noted some very unusual features."

Based on Keller's research, Valentine and other scientists took Alvin into the area in 2007 and discovered the source of the mystery.

Using the sub's robotic arm, the researchers broke off samples and brought them to labs at UCSB and WHOI for testing.

In 2009, Valentine and colleagues made two more dives to the area in Alvin.

They also conducted a detailed survey of the area using an autonomous underwater vehicle, Sentry, which takes photos as it glides about nine feet above the ocean floor.

Valentine said: "When you 'fly' Sentry over the sea floor, you can see all of the cracking of the asphalt and flow features.

"All the textures are visible of a once-flowing liquid that has solidified in place.

"That's one of the reasons we're calling them volcanoes, because they have so many features that are indicative of a lava flow."

Tests showed that these aren't typical lava volcanoes, however, found in Hawaii and elsewhere around the Pacific Rim.

Using a mass spectrometer, carbon dating, microscopic fossils, and comprehensive, two-dimensional gas chromatography, the scientists determined that the structures are asphalt.

They were formed when petroleum flowed from the sea-floor about 30,000-40,000 years ago.

Chris Reddy, a scientist at WHOI and a co-author of the paper, said "the volcanoes underscore a little-known fact: half the oil that enters the coastal environment is from natural oil seeps like the ones off the coast of California."

The researchers also found that the volcanoes were at one time a prolific source of methane, a greenhouse gas.

The two largest volcanoes are about a kilometer apart and have pits or depressions surrounding them.

These pits, according to Valentine, are signs of "methane gas bubbling from the sub-surface."

That's not surprising, he said, considering how much petroleum was flowing there in the past.

Valentine said: "They were spewing out a lot of petroleum, but also lots of natural gas.... which you tend to get when you have petroleum seepage in this area."

The discovery that vast amounts of methane once emanated from the volcanoes caused the scientists to wonder if there might have been an environmental impact on the area during the Ice Age.

Valentine said: "It became a dead zone.

"We're hypothesizing that these features may have been a major contributor to those events."

While the volcanoes have been dormant for thousands of years, the 2009 Alvin dive revealed a few spots where gas was still bubbling.

"We think it's residual gas," said Valentine, adding that the amount of gas is so small it's harmless, and never reaches the surface.

The study has appeared in a paper published on-line this week in the journal Nature Geoscience.

Sitting all day as bad as little exercise

Sitting all day may significantly boost the risk of lifestyle-related disease even if one adds a regular dose of moderate or vigorous exercise, Work scientists said Tuesday.

The health benefits of pulse-quickening physical activity are beyond dispute -- it helps ward off cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity, among other problems.

But recent scientific findings also suggest that prolonged bouts of immobility while resting on one's rear end may be independently linked to these same conditions.

"Sedentary time should be defined as muscular inactivity rather than the absence of exercise," concluded a team of Swedish researchers. "We need to consider that we are dealing with two distinct behaviours and their effects," they reported in the British Journal of Sports Medicine .

Led by Elin Ekblom-Bak of the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, the scientists proposed a new "paradigm of inactivity physiology," and urged fellow researchers to rethink the definition of a sedentary lifestyle.

They point to a recent study of Australian adults showing that each daily one-hour increase in sitting time while watching television upped the rate of metabolic syndrome in women by 26 percent -- regardless of the amount of moderate-to-intensive exercise performed.

Thirty minutes of daily physical exercise decreased the risk by about the same percentage, suggesting that being a couch potato can cancel out the benefits of hitting treadmill or biking, for example. Metabolic syndrome is defined as the presence of three or more factors including high blood pressure, abdominal obesity, high cholesterol or insulin resistance. New research is required to see if there is a causal link between being sedentary and these conditions and, if so, how it works, the researchers said.

One candidate is lipoprotein lipase, or LPL, an enzyme that plays a crucial role in breaking down fat within the body into useable forms. Recent research has shown that LPL activity was significantly lower in rats with restrained muscle activity -- as low as one tenth of the levels of rats allowed to walk about.

The LPL level during such activity "was not significantly different from that of rats exposed to higher levels of exercise," the scientists reported. "This stresses the importance of local muscle contraction per se, rather than the intensity of the contraction."

These studies suggest that people should not only exercise frequently, but avoid sitting in one place for too long, they said.

Climbing stairs rather than using an elevator, taking five-minute breaks from a desk job, and walking when possible to do errands rather than driving were all recommended.

Milk is not a great health food

Milk is an over hyped food item. It contains proteins, calcium and fats and is definitely not a complete food. Health consultant Shikha Sharma states, “Milk is not a great health food as it is perceived to be. Adults don’t really need much milk, but our society has a fixation with milk, that too about the regular intake of milk. They think that if you don’t want to eat a meal, have milk and it will substitute as a complete meal. Some people thus go on endless fasts relying on milk and fruits alone. But this will ultimately lead to nutritional deficiency.”

Though it’s healthy to be slim and fit, but it’s ugly to be anorexic too. The art lies in finding the right balance, so make sure you read the fine line. Whatever said and done, I’m not canvassing for you to be ok with any unnecessary excess flab. This is why I thought of taking up the ubiquitous excess-weight problem this week, and addressing the basic concern of all…the tummy! Here’s what I have to suggest.

1. Touch-my-knee:

Lie on your back. Lift your one knee and bend it towards your chest with the help of your hands. Try and make your nose touch your knee. The second leg remains on the ground. Once we become comfortable, try raising the second leg in the air till about a 45 degrees tilt. Remain in the pose for around 30 seconds. Then slowly get back and relax. Alternate with the other leg. Repeat the round twice.

2. Forward-bend:

Sit down with your legs stretched out together and the arms extended in the air upwards. Now try and stretch yourself by getting your back and palms down to touch the toes. While doing this contract your stomach muscles. Try holding your toes now with your hands. Stay for as long as possible and then come up. Relax and then repeat once more. You would need a good level of flexibility to do this, so don’t exert yourself on the first day. First warm up and then do it gradually. You might not attain these poses perfectly in the first few days, but don’t bother, gradually it would come around.

3. Cobra-style:

Lie down with the forehead on the ground. Keep the legs together and the arms at the sides with the palms by the side of the thighs. Now bring the arms closer to shoulder and then bend the arms at the elbows to bring the palms right below the shoulder. Tilt the head upwards to look up. Then slowly arch the spine and pressing the palms raise the upper trunk from the ground. Stay for 20 counts. Then slowly resume to normal position. Repeat twic

If you want to lose weight fast, then these are 3 of the best exercises for fast weight loss that I have listed below that will help you lose weight in record time. 1. Interval running: Running has the potential to burn more calories per amount of time worked than any other exercise there is. No, I don’t mean jogging. Although you can use walking, then jogging as a way to prepare yourself to be able to run in the future. 2. Rowing: I love rowing. Rowing is a complete body workout and can be done outside on a lake, in the comfort of your own home, or at a gym. It burns a lot of calories and builds lean muscle. 3. Squat Presses: This exercise is well known to trainers and athletes alike, but not to the mainstream. It is simply taking a dumbbell or a barbell, then doing a squat.
